Beirut - Lebanon
The 26th and 27th of January 2018 marked the creation of the lab for the digital future of the MENA region. It all started when a group of individuals in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and Germany realized that the digital community in the Arab world had real potential. To explore the impact and opportunities digitalization and its different instruments can bring to Arab societies by improving and transforming lives while promoting inclusion and equality, they created the Digital Arabia Network (#DAN). And Beirut witnessed the exciting start of a new era of meaningful connection with the launch of #DAN.
Beirut was specifically selected by the founders as the launch place for this initiative. Over the course of the two day launch event, 34 participants from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and Germany came together to represent all spheres of the digital community. Beirut Digital District (BDD), the main venue, was abuzz with presentations, group discussions, and round tables. Key questions were posed such as “what does it take to build a digital community?” and the diversity of the digital community in the Arab world was analyzed. Best practices were explored in-depth. But the real highlight was the creation of #DAN’s manifesto and online platform to connect the digital community in the MENA region through specific tools which were discussed and developed during the actual event.
Since then, #DAN also took major steps towards setting itself up to become the key platform for digital pioneers changing lives through art, culture, education, business, economy, media, NGOs, technology, and politics.
